Pakistan may adopt VHT

treatment for exporting mangoes

LAHORE (INP): Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) Chairman Standing Committee on Horticulture & Agri Produce, Ahmad Jawad has called on JICA Advisor Hideaki Shimizu in FPCCI office at Lahore to discuss the dry and fresh mangoes export prospects for Japanese market. Jawad said Japan is a lucrative market for Pakistani mangoes and we want to capture the maximum share compared to Phillipines and Thailand mangoes due to our exotic taste. He urged federal government must give subsidy on the import of Vapor Heat Treatment (VHT) plants to tap 10,000 tons consumption Japanese market and other high value markets like Australia, South Korea through JICA technical assistance.

Currently 15 tons per day capacity plant would cost more than $1 million.

However Shimzu said in the upcoming season we are expecting 500 tons Pakistani mangoes that will be exported to Japan from the facility of Fauji Fresh & Freeze Limited under VHT treatment. I believe it is a good start and if it continues, soon you people replace the Thai mangoes from there.

He also appreciated the proposal of Chairman Standing Committee regarding the export of dry mangoes to Japan which doesn’t requires any VHT and other treatments.

Jawad suggested JICA should educate our exporters and farmers to promote dry mangoes export to Japan and other parts of the world as country production is about 2 millions tons.

He also lauded the efforts of Fauji Fresh & Freeze to promote Pakistan horticulture exports internationally through its modern standards which is need of the hour.

Fitch revises Finland rating

outlook to ‘negative’

WASHINGTON (AFP): Bond rater Fitch cut the outlook for Finland’s sovereign debt grade to “negative” Friday, saying the country’s growth prospects have worsened, in part because of a fall in exports to Russia. Finland still enjoys a top-level AAA rating, Fitch said. But it noted that GDP contracted 0.1 percent last year after slowing the previous two years. It cut slightly its outlook for 2015, saying the economy would expand 0.5 percent. “Prospects for economic growth are weak and have deteriorated... External trade prospects have been adversely affected by a sharp fall in exports to Russia, Finland’s third-largest trading partner,” Fitch said.

It also pointed to a sharp increase in net external debt of the country, to 34.7 percent of GDP, double the median for countries enjoying the AAA rating.

“The Finnish economy is adjusting to sector-specific shocks in the electronics and paper sectors, and is also experiencing the effects of population ageing,” it noted. “The combination of the structural decline in key industrial sectors and a diminishing workforce has led to a sharp decline in productivity growth and in estimates of potential economic growth.”
