LAHORE - Three alleged dacoits were shot dead while three traders got critically wounded during a robbery attempt at a jewellery shop located near Dhobi Ghaat in Baghbanpura area on Saturday.

Police claimed that those died during the crossfire were dacoits. Another accomplice of the gunmen fled the crime scene during the shootout.

A jeweller, his son, and nephew sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to a hospital where condition of one of them was said to be serious. An Edhi ambulance shifted three dead bodies to the Mayo Hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

Inspector Muhammad Nasrullah said that two of the dead were identified as Muhammad Ramazan, 34, resident of Vehari district and Iftikhar Ahmed, 40, resident of district Khanewal. However, identity of the third man is yet to be ascertained.

Three men were lying dead in and outside the shop as the police reached the spot, said sub-inspector Afzal Saroya.

Three gunmen forced their entry into the Mashaa Allah Jewellers located at Tariq Shaheed Road in Sirajpura locality while another was taking his position outside, according to eyewitnesses. The robbers held up the shop owner, Muhammad Shoaib, at gunpoint and demanded cash and gold ornaments.

As he tried to put up resistance, the robbers opened straight fire at him. In the meantime, Shoaib’s son Muhammad Hamza and nephew Waqas reached there and tried to overpower the bandits. But they shot the cousins wounding them seriously.

Watching the boys bleeding after being shot, Shoaib managed to take out a pistol from the cupboard and opened fire at the robbers. Three of them died on the spot while their accomplice fled the crime scene.

Dozens of shopkeepers gathered on the spot soon after the incident and staged a strong protest demonstration against the police. They were of the view that the police had failed to control rising crimes particularly armed robberies.

Police investigators and forensic experts also reached there and collected evidences from the crime scene. Further investigations are underway.

FOUND DEAD: A 45-year-old man was found dead from Mozang police precincts on early Saturday. The body was moved to morgue for autopsy. Police said that the deceased, unidentified so far, was lying dead alongside a road as they reached the spot. Some passerby spotted the body and called the police. Investigation is in process.
