Los Angeles - The Nice Guys opens on Friday in theaters everywhere courtesy of Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. The Shane Black mystery comedy, starring the likes of Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Keith David and Angourie Rice, is a production coming in at a cost of $50 million. It is positioned as a prime piece of summer counter-programming. The Nice Guys could swing an over/under $20 million opening weekend and leg it to $60m domestic with Warner Bros.’ overseas marketing muscle doing the rest. And that may be the case. But it is either amusing or a little sad that our “A” movies have become so huge in scale and scope that a $50m Joel Silver production starring the likes of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, an action comedy no less, is considered a “small” summer release in comparison.

And yeah, it’s just one of a handful of smaller mainstream offerings Warner Bros. will be releasing amid the likes of Tarzan and Suicide Squad.
