LAHORE - Sabir Ali of Wapda created a new record in the 4000m individual pursuit in the fifth National Cycling Championship which began here at the Lahore Velodrome on Monday. Pakistan Cycling Federation president Munawar Baseer was chief guest on the occasion and inaugurated the event while Pakistan Hockey Federation president Qasim, Senior Vice President Pakistan Tennis Federation Col (retd) Asif Dar and others honourable guest were also present on the occasion. In 4000m individual pursuit, Sabir Ali of Wapda was the new record holder with the time line of 5:7:12 followed by Habib Ullah of SSGC and Asad Mehmood of Army. In the 1000m time trial, Zulfiqar Ali of Wapda grabbed first position, Asad Mehmood of Army earned the second and M Shakeel of Railways got third position. In the 1000m sprint, M Shakeel of Railways was on top followed by Naveed of Wapda. Meanwhile, POA secretary and PCF ex-secretary Idrees Haider Khawaja said that the new body had no right yet to orgainse the national championships till the decision of court was not issued and if any unit would participate in the championship, the court notice would be served to that unit. "The new body cannot start work till the court decision and if they do so then it will be violation of the court orders and they will have to face the music." When contacted newly-elected secretary Syed Azhar Ali Shah, he replied: "The court will issue notice to the participating units if they will be illegal, if they are not illegal, then no one can issue notice to them. We are a legal body and we will continue working for the promotion of cycling across the country." "We have won the election on 24th September and were recognized by the Pakistan Olympic Association. Now, after the consultation of the house, we have decided to hold the National Cycling Championship in which maximum numbers of the cycling units are taking part to make it successful," he added. "In December, we will hold house meeting in which next year calendar will be finalized and in the last month of the year, we are organizing two cycling events, one will be from Abbottabad to Nathiyagali and second one from Pindi to Murree," he concluded.
