MULTAN (APP): Exactly twenty-eight percent of milk samples out of 210 collected from across Multan city, contained Urea which was fatal for kidneys.

This was revealed in a recent research conducted by Food Sciences and Technology Department of Bahauddin Zakariya University. The department has been conducting research over synthetic milk for the last three years, said Assistant Professor Dr Muhammad Riaz while talking to this news agency here on Friday.

He informed that milkmen used urea, caustic soda, oil and detergent for preparing synthetic milk and added that Urea and Caustic Soda were very dangerous for heart and kidneys.

Eye sight Children may face eye sight, diarrhoea, indigestion and headache owing to use of Urea in milk, Dr Riaz stated adding that Caustic Soda worked as ‘ slow poisoning’ for cardiac and Hypertensive  (high blood pressure) patients.

He said that milkmen used detergents as emulsifier in synthetic milk and added that caustic soda is used for preserving the milk for a long time.

On a question he informed that the synthetic milk turned dark yellow and bitter after 3 to 6 hours.

However, Dr Riaz said that the milk resembled in taste and dietary qualities with ordinary milk. He urged the government to ban the sale of synthetic milk in the market.

To another question he stated that Higher Education Commission (HEC) has allocated a sum of Rs 6.5 million with which his department has established a laboratory  for research on synthetic milk and added that all and sundry could get a test of milk from it.
