LAHORE -  The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), his family and companions who were martyred in Karbala, was observed across the country including Lahore with religious solemnity yesterday.

Unprecedented security arrangements were made on the occasion, including blockage of cellular phone services to avoid any untoward incident.

Tazia processions were taken out from various cites besides hundreds of Majalis that were held to commemorate the great sacrifice offered by the grandson of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his companions.

In Lahore, the main Tazia procession emerged from Alaf Shah Haveli in the Walled City in the morning that concluded at Karbala Gamey Shah late night after passing through traditional route. The procession passed through Masjid Wazir Khan, Sunehri Masjid, Pani Wala Talab, Rang Mehal, Bazar-e-Hakeeman, and Bhati Gate.

Thousands of policemen were deployed along the process route and at Majalis sites to avert any unpleasant incident. Cellular phone service remained off in the close vicinity of route of procession.

Processions were also taken out from Mochi Gate, Model Town, Islampura, Thokar Niaz Baig, Imamia Colony, Jafria Colony, Nawab Town and other areas.

Scholars highlighted the message of Karbala sacrifices, stressing the need for observing it in the daily lives to regain the glory of Islam.

The central procession was deliberately delayed for an hour due to concluding session of Urs of Hazrat Ali Hajveri (RA) in the close vicinity of concluding point of the procession, Karbala Gamey Shah. The police blocked the roads leading to the route of the main procession with barbed wire, barricades and containers. Only mourners were allowed entry after thorough body search through metal detectors and walkthrough gates. CCTV cameras were also installed along the routes, which were monitored at special control room set up at DCO office.

Medical camps were also established by Rescue 1122 as they provided first aid to mourners.
