KHAIRPUR - The Gambat bypass on the National Highway remained blocked for the second consecutive day on Tuesday as hundreds of sugarcane growers continued their sit-in on Gambat Chowk against non-acceptance of their demands.

The protesters are being led by Jamal Mehmood Khuhro, Lal Bux Sial, Choudhry Faqeer Hussain, Muhammad Panjal Khuhro and others.

The growers are demanding the fixation of sugarcane price at Rs200/per 40 kg and resumption of operation of sugar mills. The growers told newsmen that their protest would continue till the acceptance of their demands.

Meanwhile, the district administration has made preparations to launch an operation against the growers and over 200 cops have been deployed in the vicinity of the area where the protest is going on.

Nusrat visits protest camp

Meanwhile Pakistan Muslim League –Functional (PML-F) MPA Nusrat Sahar Abbasi arrived at the protest camp and assured the famers her party’s full cooperation.

Talking to newsmen, she told that PPP had not been attending to the growers’ issues for many years because these sugar mills were owned by party leaders and supporters. She said the provincial government had destroyed the agriculture sector.

She demanded fixation of the price of sugarcane and resumption of operation of sugar mills immediately so that not only the farmers could be benefitted but also the province. She also said that farmers’ issues would be taken up in the assembly.
