KARACHI - A strong group of Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) has disowned its four members for not cooperating with the factions executive body. They have been alleged of supporting different stance of the establishment of university. Conversely, Karachi University Teachers Society is going to hold its election to select new office bearers. A senior member of the KUTS, Prof Dr Abid Hasnain, told The Nation on Wednesday that the former Sohail Burkati group had disowned Dr Shakil Farooqui, Dr Aquil Ahmed, Dr Anila and Saba Masood; these members are currently serving on important positions in the KUTS cabinet. The members of Sohail Burkati group, in a general body meeting, have already demanded such four office bearers to leave the positions from KU Syndicate voluntarily; Dr Farooqui and his companions has misused teachers mandate on different occasions, which shows he does not believe in democratic values, he said. Dr Farooqui and his companion have failed to obtain confidence to any further extent of large number of teachers, belonging to the Burkati group, he said. The large number of teachers, who believe in democracy, self-respect and integrity of the teachers, are supporting our group, which is the leading group in the KU. Burkati Group has nominated six members for the forthcoming election; as per the nomination, Prof Dr Abid Hasnain nominated as president, Dr Mutahir Ahmed as Vice President, Prof Faiyaz as Secretary, Samina Qureshi as Treasurer, Dr Haris Shoaib and Moiz Khan as Joint Secretary, Prof Hasnain mentioned. It is alleged that Dr Shakil Farooqui is seeking help from Sindh Teachers Forum (STF) and Former Pervez Siddiqui Teachers Group to produce strong contestant in the forthcoming KUTS election. Commenting on the issue, Dr Shakil Farooqui said that this was propaganda against him that he had tried to find help from Sindh Teachers Forum (STF) and Former Pervez Siddiqui Teachers Group to produce strong contestant in the forthcoming KUTS election. However it is true we are going to contest separately in the election for which we have already announced nominations of our candidates, he said. Some members in the Burkati group do not want me and other three members to work on top positions in the group, he said and added that the only reason behind the said split in the group is the matter of liking or disliking. As many as six names of teachers have been recommended for contesting in the forth coming election. These names include Dr Shakil Khan for the slot of president, Dr Anila Amber Malik for vice president, Dr Shakil Farouqui for secretary, Saba Masood for treasurer, Naheed Perveen and Adnan Khan for joint secretary. We hope large number of teachers will support us in the election, he said.
