KARACHI - The Crime Investigation Department (CID) Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) Tuesday claimed to have arrested most wanted criminal, involved in the target killings from New Karachi Sector 5/A-2 and recovered illicit weapon from his possession. On a tip-off, an AEC team, headed by SP Omar Shahid and Ch Aslam raided a place and arrested the culprit after a brief shoot-out. The AEC team also seized a Kalashnikov and a 9mm pistol from his possession. During preliminary investigation, the accused was identified as Ishtiaq alias Salman alias (police wala) who had been involved in more than 25 target killing incidents. SP Omar Shahid said that the culprit had confessed to have committed over 25 murders including that of DSP Rahim Bangash, DSP Nawaz Ranjha, Inspector Nasirul Hassan, Inspector Sajid, Sharif Khan, ASI Maqsood, Muhammad Aslam, Naseem Akhter, Sher Muhammad, Jhangir Mirza and others. The SP said that the accused had been arrested by the Azizabad Police for possessing illicit arms in 1997. Omar Shahid said that the accused had been a constable at the Sindh Police Special Branch. He joined the Sindh Police in 1990, however, he was suspended for dereliction of duty the same year, he detailed. He pointed out that he was leading three gangs of target killers which operated in Landhi, New Karachi and Liaquatabad and affiliated with a political party. The SP said that more raids were being conducted in the light of information extorted from the accused to nab his other accomplices.
