CDG to purchase excavator for levelling garbage

LAHORE - Solid Waste Management Department of City District Government has decided to purchase an excavator to manage heaps of garbage at landfill sites, TheNation has learnt. The machinery worth over Rs 35 million will be imported for which the CDGL has invited tenders from well-reputed firms. Unplanned dumping of garbage at Mehmood Booti landfill site has caused scarcity of space besides creating serious environmental hazards. Owing to the lack of space at Mehmood Booti, the CDG earlier contacted National Logistic Cell (NLC) to level heaps of garbage at the landfill site. The CDGL, however, dropped the idea, as the NLC demanded Rs 80 million for managing and levelling heaps of garbage at Mehmood Booti landfill site. NLC demanded a huge amount for levelling heaps of garbage at Mehmood Booti. The CDG can purchase its own machinery with far less cost than the amount demanded by NLC, said an official, adding the excavator to be imported at an expected cost of Rs 35 million would be used in future and the CDG was still interested in hiring the services of a firm, other than NLC, to manage garbage at landfill site. Besides purchasing its own excavator, the CDG is hiring the services of a private firm to level garbage at Mehmood Booti. Once the firm levels garbage at Mehmood Booti, the CDG will use its own machinery and manpower to manage solid waste at the landfill site in future, the official maintained.
