BAHAWALPUR (Agencies) President Asif Ali Zardari has said that 90 per cent arrests have been made in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto while action is underway against those who hosed down the evidence from the crime scene. A special group is conducting probe into the slaying of Benazir Bhutto, President told a delegation of Multan Press Club Thursday, reported a private TV channel. He said the objective of UN probe was not just to support the local investigation, but also it has become an international document. To a question, he said: The judiciary is passing through a phase of evolution. We will have to see what happens next. Meanwhile, Zardari said PPP government proved its critics wrong as he gave up presidential powers and preserved rights of the people. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Benazir Smart Card here at Ashrafabad, the President said 35 years ago Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto took forward the idea to bring power to the people. We want to rule hearts of the people, he said adding, I did not stick to presidential powers and gave them back. Slogan of PPP is that people are the rulers. He said for the PPP leaders politics was worship and they embraced martyrdom and went to jails to preserve and protect rights of the people and their party lived on. Blood of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto runs in the struggle of the PPP, he said, adding, Some political actors wanted to tell people that the PPP is not the voice of the people but we proved them wrong. When I spent eight years in jail, people welcomed me on my release as they came to know that those elements were lying about me. President Zardari said nation faces tests and one test came when Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was buried in Naudero. Voice was coming from all provinces and areas, putting integrity of Pakistan at stake but I made them understand that Pakistan belongs to us all and the martyrs of PPP made the country strong, he recalled. He said Bahawalpur was neglected for sixty years and no projects were initiated there but now the Prime Minister is from the south and the government is launching a number of development schemes in the area. He said for the first time the government of Benazir Bhutto set up private power plants but when her government was dismissed she was criticised for that initiative. He said the demand for province of Bahawalpur needs to be taken up by Parliament according to the Constitution. He also announced hundreds of scholarships including 100 scholarships for Islamia University and 500 for students of information technology. The President said after restoring the constitution he selected Bahawalpur for his visit as the region is backward and has more needs. He said water issue of Bahawalpur will be resolved as lack of rain increases economic difficulties. Earlier, Chairperson Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) Farzana Raja said the BISP is giving financial aid to five million families. The programme provides financial and social protection to women, she added. Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is the main social safety net programme of the government for which Rs70 billion has been allocated to cover 16 percent of the population. The World Bank approved instrument named Poverty Scorecard based on Proxy Means Testing has been adopted and a nationwide poverty survey has been planned to identify the poor families. Under the programme, data of 2.1 million households has been collected so far. On the occasion, President Zardari gave Benazir Smart Card to ten women and keys of auto rickshaws to five women. Meanwhile, Zardari unveiled a string of development projects aimed at bringing about a positive change in the lifestyle of the people of South Punjab. The President launched projects that include the Rs6 billion Rahim Yar Khan grid station, Rs 1.95 billion optic fibre connectivity, provision of gas supply for Musafar Khana and Basti Noorpur and the Sweet Home - orphanage project. President Zardari also performed the opening ceremony of Pakistan Sweet Home - orphanage centre that would provide a family environment providing the children a solid foundation on which to build their lives. Recognising the enormity of problems faced by the common men, Zardari reiterated the governments resolve to address these issues problems by utilising all available resources while generating more. I know the problems are enormous, but the government will address these issues by increasing the countrys resources, Zardari said while addressing a convention of the representatives, office-bearers and the leadership of Peoples Youth Organisation (PYO), Peoples Students Federation (PSF) and Peoples Labour Bureau (PLB) from Multan, Bahawalpur and DG Khan divisions here at Ashrafabad. The President said the present government was developing a new relationship with the world including the United State, China and Europe, aimed at presenting a prosperous and dignified Pakistan. We, in line with the mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, will create a new Pakistan, where all problems are addressed and the people lead a happy life and with their own way, he remarked. Zardari said he gets strength and guidance from the vision and philosophy of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who never compromised on principles. He vowed to take forward the vision of Shaheed Benazir. The President said Mohtarma Benazir had a great vision, as she held dialogue with the world powers for restoration of democracy in Pakistan, which led to doffing of uniform by General Pervez Musharraf.
