ISLAMABAD (INP) - With increase in temperature, the power shortfall in the country has crossed 5,000 MW leading to 12 hours loadshedding in rural areas and nine hours in cities. According to Pepco sources, generation of power from different sources on Friday was 9,564 MW as against the demand of 1,4475 MW. They said while hydel power generation had gone down due to slow melting of snow, the generation had also been reduced in thermal sector for various reasons. Thermal generation is now 1,396 MW and RPPs 154 MW. Meanwhile Southern Punjab including Multan faces 575 MW shortfall due to which loadshedding period has reached 14-hours. In Faisalabad, the loadshedding duration had reached 16 hours and traders had decided to protest against the unscheduled outages from today (Saturday). While in other provinces, 10-12 hours unscheduled loadshedding had become a routine matter. According to sources, the country had a capacity of producing over 19,000 MW electricity but due to shortage of gas and furnace oil, thermal production had decreased by 50 per cent and hydel production had also decreased by 70pc. Meanwhile, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has started a drive against the electricity thieves.The KESC spokesperson on Friday said a big campaign had been launched against the power thieves, which would kick-start at places that topped the list of defaulters and electricity theft. He said FIRs would be registered against all such persons caught during the drive against theft of electricity and their power connections would be cut off on the spot.
