ISLAMABAD - Ambassador of Cuba Jesus Zenen Buergo Concecion, called on Federal Minister for Sports Engineer Shaukat Ullah here at the Ministry of Sports on Friday. Federal Secretary Sports Aziz Ahmed Bilour and Director General Pakistan Sports Board Syed Amir Hamza Gillani were also present during the occasion. During the meeting, the Cuban Ambassador extended an invitation to Sports Minister to visit Cuba, which will certainly pave the way to enhance and strengthen relations between the two countries in the field of sports. Pakistan is already enjoying cordial relations with Cuba and their nationals are already giving training to Pakistani boxers. The Ambassador said: "We want more meaningful and improved relations in the field of sports and are willing to start coaching exchange programme. Pakistan is a great sporting nation and possesses extraordinary talent in many sporting fields like cricket, hockey, squash and kabbadi. We would like to benefit from the rich experience of Pakistan and exchange ours with them. Baseball and volleyball are very popular in Cuba and we would be very pleased if our expertise can provide any kind of assistance to Pakistan." The Ambassador invited the Minister to visit the University of Sports in Cuba, which conducts research in the field of sports and provides training to players and coaches from all over the world." Shaukat Ullah praised the Cuban government's role in providing medical assistance to the people of earthquake affected areas in 2005. He further said that the present democratic government of Pakistan attaches special importance to the promotion of sports in the country so that the youth of the country can be productively channelised in order to curb the menace of extremism. He showed his interest in inviting Cuban volleyball team to play in Pakistan, which will not only give international exposure to Pakistani players, but also send message to the rest of the world that Pakistan is peaceful country and there is no element of terror what so ever. He said that Cuban coaches are doing well in Pakistan and helped a lot in the enhancing the skills Pakistani boxers. He also showed his desire to build cooperation between the two countries in sports on concrete lines. Pakistan can provide coaching expertise to Cuban players in the field of cricket, squash, kabbadi and hockey, he added. The Sports Minister also presented a souvenir to the visiting Cuban Ambassador. The dates of the visit of the Minister to Cuba will be finalized later. The visit is expected to take place in May. Meanwhile, different associations representatives including, Pakistan Badminton Federation, Pakistan Billiard and Snooker Association and others also called on the minister at his office and apprise the minister of their problems. The minister assured the visiting guest that he will do whatever he can to provide facilities to the associations and will talk to the Prime Minister to seek allocation of a special grant for these associations.
