OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Like other parts of the globe, World Earth Day was observed across the country including the City on Friday to create public awareness about environmental and climate change issues. WED is celebrated across the globe on April 22 since the year 1070 under different themes. This WED theme is A Billion Acts of Green. The goal of A Billion Acts of Green is to utilize global network to inspire people, groups, corporations, towns, states, countries to collectively generate a billion acts of environmental advocacy and service before the Rio +20 Earth Summit 2012, which takes place from July 4th 6th in Rio de Janeiro. In major cities of Pakistan, conferences, seminars and walks were organised both at the government and private level to mark the event. On April 22, 1970, Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator, founded the first Earth Day in an attempt to bring about a better understanding of the affect on planet, and calling to take action to make positive environmental changes in the community. The first Earth Day was attended by 20 million Americans nationwide, from college campuses to town halls, and giant teach-ins were organized in New York City and Philadelphia, the latter event turning into a seven-day event known as Earth Week. This small attempt to start something of this scale on the national level brought millions of people to band together in their neighborhoods, starting grassroots campaigns to help revolutionize the way of handling waste, recycling, power consumption, and conservation in general. That event set a powerful precedent for the rest of the world, eventually inspiring more than 140 nations all around the globe to have their own Earth Days.
