ISLAMABAD- Chief Executive Officer, Engineering Development Board (EDB) Asad Elahi has called upon local Motorcycle Manufacturers to double their efforts to utilize local capacity to produce components and subsequent target at exploring markets for export. He was addressing a meeting here on Friday in which ways and means were discussed to increase local manufacturing of parts. He added that manufacturing of high value added components and assemblies for motorcycles locally would make them more competitive globally. The CEO said that Pakistan had needed to penetrate in African and other developing countries markets. EDB was trying to arrange an exhibition of engineering goods in these countries with the assistance of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan in near future to introduce Pakistani products, he added. The meeting was informed that motorcycle industry of Pakistan in last few years has accomplished high volume of annual production. The production of motorcycles stood at 1,058,039 in year 2007-08 out of which 48pc of Chinese origin and as targeted in Auto Industry Development Programme (AIDP) would reach 1.5m by year 2011-12. Maj Gen Zaheer Ahmed Khan, Chairman, State Engineering Corporation briefed the meeting about production facilities available in Pakistan Machine Tools Factory and PECO. He assured that these production units were well equipped to meet the demand of the motorcycle industry. It was decided that the representatives of motorcycle industry will visit PMTF on August 30 and PECO on 28th August, 2008 in order to familiarise themselves about the facilities available there.
