ISLAMABAD - The Central Executive Committee meeting of Pakistan People's Party with a voice vote proposed the candidature of party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari for the slot of President of Pakistan but at the same time left it to him to follow the demand of CEC or nominate someone else in his place. Talking to media persons after the meeting outside Prime Minister House Federal Minister for Information Sherry Rehman said that each and every member of the CEC was of the view that Asif Ali Zardari should put his stake for the slot and a unanimous resolution was also adopted to this effect by the CEC with voice vote. However, it was left to party Co-Chairman to make a decision on his own and Asif Ali Zardari had said that he would announce his decision in two days. Asif Ali Zardari thanked the CEC members for reposing confidence in his leadership and said that to him the party's responsibilities were more important than any other responsibility, which the CEC wanted him to take. He further said that it was an honour for him that his party CEC had nominated him for the slot of President of Pakistan but added that he would decide about his future course in the next couple of days and hinted that the party's responsibilities were more important to him. One of the CEC members who attended the meeting informed TheNation that at the outset the party leadership offered prayers for those who had lost their lives in the blast on Thursday at the main gates of Pakistan Wah Ordnance Factories and expressed their condolence to the bereaved families. It was further informed that Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Ch Aitzaz Ahsan were conspicuous by their presence in the meeting and both these leaders were also among those who had supported the candidature of Asif Ali Zardari for the slot of President of Pakistan. The meeting did take up the issue of judges and there was a divergent viewpoint of the members and some members were critical of the undue pressure being exerted by the PML(N) leadership about the issue. But most of the members were of the view that for the sake of democracy all the political forces should be taken along and as PML(N) was one of the main coalition partners, they should be taken into confidence about the technical problems being faced by the government on the judges issue. There were also some members of the CEC who said that the government should focus on other pressing issues like price-hike, deteriorating law and order situation and unemployment, which required attention of the government.
