KARACHI - Amidst thunderous applause and desk thumping, three parties in the ruling coalition and the entire opposition joined hands at the special session of the Sindh Assembly on Friday to unanimously adopt a resolution nominating PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari for the slot of President. Legislators belonging to the PPP, MQM and ANP, joined by opposition leader Jam Madad Ali and his PML-F colleagues, NPP and PML-Q, in an unusual show of camaraderie passed the resolution in support of Asif Zardari for the post of the President. This is the first time in its 60 years old history that the parties in Sindh Assembly sunk all their differences and rose as one man with one voice to support candidature of Asif Zardari for the presidential slot. Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, in his speech reflected the feelings of friendship and comradeship when he thanked all the members present in the assembly including those in the opposition for their support for Asif Zardari. He spared no words to personally thank on his behalf and on behalf of the PPP, the spiritual chief of PML-F Pir Pagara and NPP head Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi. The Chief Minister poured praise on the MQM chief Altaf Hussain for his party's support to the resolution nominating Asif Zardari for the Presidential post. "We are again making history by passing this important resolution, similar to another historical one passed on this very floor 63 years ago in favour of the creation of Pakistan, said Qaim Ali Shah. He said that after the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, there was a vacuum of leadership at the national level. A section of emotionally disturbed crowd had raised slogans of 'Pakistan not acceptable' (Pakistan Naa Khappey), but Asif Ali Zardari in a statesmanlike manner not only pacified the people but also chanted the slogan "Pakistan acceptable" (Pakistan Khappey) and vowed to continue struggle under the manifesto and programme of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Syed Qaim Ali Shah pointed out that democratic process was not complete unless the election of President was held. "Off course, judiciary was an important part but it came after the completion of formation of the government", he added. He said within 30 days of the general elections, the election of president has to take place. MQM parliamentary leader and Sindh Minister Shoaib Bukhari, drew the attention of the House to the events at Gari Khuda Bux where millions after the martyrdom of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto where Asif Zardari rose to the occasion to pacify the emotionally charged crowd when he raised the slogan of 'Pakistan Khappey'. Only a man of conviction and an iron will would have stood up to speak in favour of Pakistan at a time when a section of society was extremely angry and disturbed on the martyrdom of their leader, he added. In a light vein, Shoaib Bukhari said that Ayaz Soomro had stolen a step from MQM by tabling the resolution before MQM could do that. It is incumbent upon PPP not only to nominate Asif Zardari for the presidential post but also see that he is elected, he said. "Whether one likes it or not but we had good relations with former President Pervez Musharraf so we found a way to steer the country out of the crisis", he added. He said that his party was not only supporting Asif Ali Zardari but it would also propose and second him when he file nomination papers for presidential office. Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro tabled the resolution that read," This assembly resolves that following the tragic Shahadat of Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari showed political wisdom and through his efforts and reconciliation, got formed the coalition government at the federal and all provinces. He in consultation and cooperation of coalition partners, through his political sagacity and acumen restored the true democracy in the country." The resolution further read," Under the circumstances, Asif Ali Zardari is the most suitable candidate for the office of President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan." Leader of opposition Jam Madad Ali on behalf of PML-F said his party chief Pir Pagara had made it clear after February 18 election that the party would support any good measure taken by the ruling coalition and added that working in the same spirit the party was supporting the resolution in favour of Asif Zardari, who is a candidate from the small province of Sindh. "We would support any good measure of the ruling coalition and we were doing the same by backing Asif Zardari for the top national slot", he added. Senior minister Pir Mazharul Haq, Law Minister Ayaz Soomro, ANP minister Ameer Nawab, NPP legislator Masroor Jatoi, PML-F lawmaker Ms Nusrat Abbasi, PML-Q member Ghalib Hussain Domki, deputy speaker Ms Shehla Raza and others, in their speeches, praised the House for extending full support to the resolution nominating Asif Zardari for the top slot. Speaker Nisar Khuhro put the resolution in the House, which was adopted unanimously. Later, he adjourned the House till Monday morning.
