Floods are useful?

People who oppose dams and say that floods are useful because they wash away silt from the barrages, should tell this to the people who have lost their homes and hearths in the floods. In any case floods of lower intensity will continue even if dams are built. Kalabagh dam having a capacity of 6.1 million acre feet will not stop the floods entirely but will only moderate them, thereby also moderating the flood losses. Floods of lower intensity will continue to wash away silt from the barrages and continue to irrigate the low lying areas along the Indus. Kalabagh dam is a win-win position for all. Sindh will get all the advantages of power and water without the loss of even one acre of land and the displacement of even one person. KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, August 20.
