LAHORE – At least 23 people including three real brothers and a proclaimed offender-cum-paramour died in separate areas of the Punjab Capital while a girl was injured by her brothers over different reasons during the Eid holidays. Three women, a minor, an official of a sensitive department are also among the dead.

Muhammad Butt alias Zareen was gunned down by unnamed men in Liberty area on first day of Eid. Police said that the deceased along with his girlfriend went to Liberty Market to get her hands decorated with henna. “The girl was sitting inside the shop while Butt was on driving seat of his car parked nearby the shop when unidentified men riding a motorbike approached and sprayed indiscriminate bullets on him,” they said, adding the injured was shifted to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

They, however, said the deceased was a proclaimed offender and had also illegally grabbed a house in Sabzazaar. “Although, an FIR has been chalked out against unidentified men but I suspect the same house owners have claimed his life,” Circle DSP told reporters. The bullet-riddled body was removed to a morgue for autopsy.

Earlier, a 30-year-old Sajjad was shot dead and a passerby wounded when some culprits sprayed a volley of bullets on them in Raiwind City seconds before Eid prayers were started. Police have booked Shahzad, Babar and Liaqat. Police say the suspects believed the deceased was in love with their sister, as they also shot at and injured her later.

A nine-year-old Awais of Nishat Colony was killed after alleged molestation by unknown culprits in South Cantonment police precincts. Unnamed men have been booked. Muhammad Shafiq of Baghbanpura and father of three children also died when a stray bullet pierced into his body at the residence of his in-laws in Islampura. No case was registered yet.

Asif (40) while riding a bicycle was hit by a speeding car and sustained minor injuries. He was shifted to the Services Hospital where he died due to alleged negligence of the doctors. Chief Minister Punjab took notice of the protest staged by the heirs to the deceased and ordered a departmental inquiry. A few doctors have been booked under criminal negligence charges.

Meanwhile, three brothers namely Shahzad Masih, Bhoro Masih and Nona Masih were electrocuted to death shortly after they fell into the well in Sandha police area. Police say circumstantial evidences show that Shahzad of Shibli Town accompanied by his brothers went into the 32-foot deep well to repair the electric motor but he suffered critical electric shocks. Police further say his brothers also went to rescue their brother, but fell prey to the motor. The owner of the well, however, alleged the deceased arrived there to rob the motor as he had never asked them to repair his motor. Police have booked the owner.

A security guard Muhammad Mushtaq of Multan was tortured to death by unidentified culprits in Defence A on first day of Eid. Muhammad Ishtiaq, owner of the house, stated to police that the family went for outing when probably his opponents arrived at the home and thrashed him badly, which led to this instant death. “We found his tortured body lying in the pool of blood,” he said.

The bereaved family claimed to have no enmity with anyone of the area. A wheelie Muhammad Awais of Shahdara died when he slipped from his motorbike. Locals removed him to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Two friends – Zeshan Haider and Shahbaz – were gunned down allegedly by their rivals Akram and Tanveer at Akbari Gate on first day of Eid. Police termed the incident the outcome of old enmity. Zeeshan, of Muhammadpura, Ichhra, visited his relatives at Kakay Zai town at Akbari Gate when culprits opened firing on them, which claimed their life. A case has been registered against the murderers and their unidentified accomplices with no arrest till filing of this report.

Sumaira Bibi of Du Moriya Bridge was crushed to death by a Muridkey to Lahore bound train. “We were on track when her shalwar stuck into the railway crossing and I tried my best but could not rescue her,” Nadeem, husband of the deceased, stated to police. Similarly, Azran Bibi (45) was also crushed to death by a speeding car when she along with her daughter Shahida was crossing the main Multan Road in Hanjerwal.

Likewise, a 15-year-old Dilawar Hussain at Batti Chowk, Ali Ahmed at Ferozepur Road, and Muhammad Ameen at Kahna and Akram at GT Road sustained multiple injuries during road mishaps and were rushed to nearby hospitals where they were pronounced dead.
