ISLAMABAD Though Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab chapter is not comfortable with Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) led coalition government in Punjab, at least they are in complete harmony with them on the issue of reverting back to old Local Bodies system and holding of LB elections on party basis, sources aware of the development informed TheNation. Sources in the PPP informed that the Punjab chapter of the party has strongly recommended to party high command that they wanted reversion back to the old Local Bodies system in the province and also asked the party to support holding of these elections on party basis. PML-N leaderships stand was quite clear on the subject as they wanted the old Municipal Corporation set-up in urban centres while district and tehsil councils to cater for the civic needs of the rural and semi-urban areas of the province. PML-N government in Punjab had already announced that they would be reverting back to old system at the basic tier of governance and would also be reviving the District Magistracy system in the province for managing the administration in effective fashion. The sources in PPP further informed that over the past few months the matter did figure in the party meetings and it was the consensus view of the Punjab chapter of the party that they would revert back to the old LB system and that the future LB polls be arranged on party basis. The Presidential cover to the incumbent district government system, introduced by the former President Gen Pervez Musharraf, would be over by December 31 after which the Local Bodies system would go into the purview of the provinces and it would be up to the provincial governments to deal with it as per their convenience. The sources aware of the developments taking place on political horizon of the country informed that in the recent meeting of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, it was the consensus view of both the leaders that the future elections of the local bodies system should be held on party basis. PM Gilani was also on same page with CM Mian Shahbaz Sharif on reverting back to the old system, sources further informed. The sources, however, informed that a separate meeting on the issue of appointment of administrators, once the incumbent system would die its natural death on December 31, would be held between the two sides as PPP also wanted to have some share in appointment of administrators. The sources informed that Shahbaz Sharif wanted to appoint career bureaucrats having good reputation as administrators in place of district and tehsil nazims till the time new system would be put in place and elections would be held. The sources further informed that the leadership of both the parties would be meeting soon to evolve a mutually acceptable strategy to appoint administrators in the province.
