QUETTA (APP) A candidate contesting by-elections on PB-I Quetta-I on Tuesday challenged the polling in the said constituency and prayed to the court to set another date for the elections after 10th Ashura. Amanullah Shadezai, a joint candidate of four political parties including Jamat-e-Islami, Tehreek-i- Insaf and Jamhori Watan Party stated before the court that the authorities had imposed Section 144 in the constituency in view of the sensitivity of the area due to its predominant population of Shiite Muslims. He added that the election hustle-bustle and the stringent security measures could affect the turn out. He prayed to the court to set some other date after Ashura for the by-polls. A Division Bench of the Balochistan High Court consisting of Mr Justice Anwar Muskanzai and Maam Justice Tahira Safdar admitted the petition of Mr Shadezai and issued notices to the Provincial Election Commission, Secretary Home Balochistan, Capital City Police Officer and Tahir Mehmood, a candidate contesting for same seat and enjoy the support of PPP, PkMAP and other parties. The bench would hear the petition today ( Wednesday, December 23), the dated fixed by the ECP for voting. When contacted an official at the Election Commission office confirmed about receiving the court notice and said that the court would decide the fate of the by-polls in the said constituency. He added that the commission had completed its preparation for the polls and was fully prepared to conduct elections on the set schedule. It is worth mentioning that the Election Commission of Pakistan has scheduled the elections in the said constituency on December 23, 2009.
