Polling is underway in by-poll on Balochistan assemblys seat PB-1 Quetta-I on Wednesday. However, severe cold forced majority of voters to stay at home. The seat had been vacated after murder of PPP leader and provincial education minister Shafeeq Ahmad Khan. Two candidates are contesting the election. PPP candidate and brother of slain Shafeeq Ahmad Tahir Mahmood is joint candidate of Peshtoonkhawa Milli Awami Party, PML-Q, Balochistan National Party Awami and Awami National Party. Jamhori Watan Party, Tahreek-e- Insaaf and Jamiat Ulema e Pakistan back the candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami Amanullah Shadezai. The provincial government declared local holiday on December 23 in district Quetta. According to Election Commission, the population of PB-1 Quetta-I is 10,7400. The number of registered voters is 65,000. Fifty-four polling stations and 137 polling booths, 29 for men and 25 for women have been established in the area. Seventeen polling stations declared sensitive and 27 extra sensitive as police, FC and Balochistan constabulary personnel have been deployed within and outside polling stations to maintain law and order situation. Polling will continue from 8: 00 am till 5:00 pm without break.
