KARACHI Opener Taufiq Umar hit a defiant unbeaten 100 and leg-spinner Abdur Rehman once again spelled his magic to bring Habib Bank in serious contention in the final of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy against Karachi Blues here on the second day of the five-day match on Tuesday at the National Stadium. Taufiq, who was unbeaten 36 overnight, was not out exactly at 100 when HBL first innings ended at 195 all out in reply to Karachi Blues total of 215. Later in the day, leggy Abdur Rehman, who had wrecked home innings with four wickets, again bowled effectively to grab three wickets for 14 as Karachi Blues second innings crumbled to measly 175 for nine at the close of the second day play giving the home team an overall lead of 195 over the bankers. Wickets on the second day tumbled like ninepins and as many as 12 wickets fell on the day. In two days contest so far as many as 29 wickets had fallen, an unusual happening at the stadium, which has the reputation of helping batsmen more than the bowlers. Both the medium pacers and the spinners shared the spoils. On day one, HBL was tottering at 95 for seven after pacer Tanveer Ahmed had ripped through to grab five wickets placing Karachi Blues in a dominating position. But the match slipped out of Karachi grasp after Taufiq flawlessly continued to dominate the bowling. He was associated in two useful partnerships that denied Karachi Blues the expected early breakthrough and took the match away from them. For 8th wicket stand with Irfan Fazil, he added valuable 59 runs and for the 9th wicket stand with Aslam Qureshi, they added another fifty runs. Pacer Tanveer who had dominated the first day remained wicket less. Much hinged on Taufiqs ability to hang on as long as he could because he was the only recognized batsman and the remaining three wickets were just tail enders. Taufiq not only stayed at the wicket but encouraged his teammates to play as the occasion demanded. His efforts revived Habib Bank hopes. Irfan Fazil left after scoring 22 in 63 deliveries and Aslam Qureshi lasted 61 balls for his 11 runs before leaving. Taufiq carried his bat through the innings and was 100 not out when Karachi Blues skipper Muhammad Sami brought an end to Habib Bank innings by bowling Sarmad Anwar for a duck. Sami who was wicket less yesterday finished with two for 58 and Tariq Haroon had two for 88. Karachi opener Shahzaib Hasan who had top scored with 67 in the first knock went out cheaply for 17. Khalid Latif managed just six runs and Ali Asad was dismissed for 17. Karachi Blues were three down for 77 and the dream of taking commanding lead just vanish in thin air. After Habib Bank pacers had dented top order, Abdur Rehman appeared on the scene and there was panic in Karachi batting line up .He was quick to strike and when he took two snap wickets Karachi slumped to 150 for seven. Only Asim Kamal batted on facing heavy odds and was unbeaten at 49 when play came to an end for the second day. Karachi last five batsmen together collected just 11 runs with two leaving without scoring. Sarmad Anwar finished with two for 38, and Younus Khan two for 39.In his match Younus has so far taken four wickets for 47. Summarized scores. Karachi Blues first innings 215.
