A point of history

My friend Wajahat Latif's article appeared on Friday 6th Feb 2009, regarding the army rule. He has stated some facts, but perhaps he was only a young schoolboy in October 1958 when President General Iskander Mirza had declared a Martial Law in the country and appointed Ayub Khan as the Chief Marshal Law Administrator. True the Army had guns in hands even back then but it was the civil service that ran the government. After the 1999 coup, Musharraf, who had a psychological problem with the civil service, stripped them of their powers and replaced them with the Nazim system that has proved a disaster from day one. With out the consent of the Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, Musharraf started the Kargil adventure by occupying the unmanned Indian bunkers that are vacated in the winter. By the time the Prime Minister realized what had happened, it was already too late. In June 1999, at the funeral of General Ghulam Jilani Khan in Lahore, I told the PM and Mian Shahbaz Sharif that 1999 was going to be Pakistan Muslim League's last year in power. Perhaps they thought I was mad. I spoke about this fear with Mr Sartaj Aziz and General Majeed Malik and gave them my reasons. Only General Majeed Malik was able to appreciate the point. We all know what happened in October and later when the disastrous rule of Musharraf began. -AURANGZEB, Swat, via e-mail, February 6.
