The governments petition requesting the Supreme Court to review its verdict against the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was returned on Tuesday by the apex court with objections. The government had not defended the NRO before the Supreme Court but had reservations on the verdict, saying the apex court had gone beyond what was requested for by the petitioners. A 17-judges bench of the Supreme Court had declared the NRO unconstitutional in December 2009. As a consequence of that verdict, over 8,000 criminal and corruption cases against bureaucrats and politicians were reopened.
