A new beginning?

There was a pin-drop silence in the National Assembly hall on Tuesday and all eyes were pinned on former foreign minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi who rose on a point of order and blew hot and cold while explaining his position on a number of counts including his position on Raymond Davis issue, which ostensibly cost him his portfolio. Except a few cabinet members and PPP hardcore MPs, his colleagues and fellow members in the house welcomed him with extra warmth as he entered the house and a number of them again patted his back when he left the house after his well calculated speech wherein he had raised many a questions and left a tacit threat of exposing the people behind, what he termed, mishandling of Raymond Davis case. With a blend of Urdu and English language, his address to the fully attentive house, with people sitting in Press Gallery equally heedful, raised many a questions, besides a detailed account of explanation on not getting back into the cabinet, rumours about his joining PML-N and playing in the hands of 'Establishment. Some of his fellow members from Pakistan Peoples Party termed it his 'political elegy but they too did not stop short of praising him for so eloquently presenting it. While some of the MPs in the house have expressed solidarity with him and said what all he did was correct and party should mend its ways. While concluding his mesmerising address Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that he would be visiting Garhi Khuda Bux on 27th of this month to pay homage to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founding chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and to share his inner feelings with his leader Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. He also made it loud and clear that he believed in politics of transparency and his whole political career was vivid and clear with no ambiguities at all and he would continue on the same path in future as well. He said that once he was termed as lackey of Americans when he was supporting Kerry-Lugar Bill and said that things were not so and time had proved that he was never lackey of the Americans and all what he did was in the national interest and he would not compromise on it in future as well. Though not clearly, he did mention that the case of Raymond Davis was mishandled and if need be, he would mention those names at some later stage. He tacitly referred to the taping of his phone calls by just saying that for past few days the voice of his telephone had changed and in the same breath requested his colleagues and leaders in the house not put their ears to the false propaganda against him. Initially newly inducted Federal Minister for Information Firdus Ashiq Awan was taking notes of his speech and the government was planning to come with a response but despite levelling strong charges on government including his espionage and spoiling of Raymond Davis case as there was no direct hit on the government or PPP central leadership, the plan was dropped after a brief word on it between Syed Khurshid Shah and Dr. Babar Awan.
