LAHORE Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court Tuesday issued notice to Punjab Food Department for February 28 on a writ petition filed against the health and environment hazards of the Poly Propylene bags being used to store of wheat at the official level. Barrister Syed Ali Zafar filed the petition and submitted that the procurement and usage of Poly Propylene bags was not only damaging to human health and environment but also against the Punjab Procurement Rules, 2009. He said when wheat (which is a living organism) is stored in these bags specially in sunlight, the Poly Propylene mixes with wheat and causes cancer and death. He argued there had been no standards/specifications prescribed by Pakistan standard quality control authority (PSQCA) for use of polypropylene bags for storage of wheat and the Punjab government had not obtained any approval with regard to usage of these bags for storage of wheat from the Authority.
