A simple classic game has slithered to the top of the chart for free apps for the iPhone this week. Snake, launched in 1998, tests players’ ability to get their snake to eat food blocks, while avoiding it slithering into walls or its own tail.

The app, by FujiCubeSoft, is described as “a very simple snake game” but its simplicity proved so popular it has knocked last week’s number one, Save The Pencil, down to number three while Temple Run held on to second place. Social networking tool WhatsApp Messenger made it up one place to the top of the iPhone paid-for app chart while last week’s number one, The Lost City, fell to number three. In the iPad app charts, Apalon’s Weather Live fell from first to seventh in the paid-for chart as Grand Theft Auto 3 shot to the top.        –OCU
