LAHORE – Pakistan Railways staff faced severe resistance from the illegal occupants during its anti-encroachment campaign at Diesel Shed Mughalpura here on Wednesday.  Reportedly, residents of the area clashed with the PR staff when they were removing encroachment in the vicinity early in the morning, resultantly four Railways Gangmen and three constables got injuried during the clash.

“They manhandled Divisional Engineer Usman Abdullah and Deputy Director Land Azam Cheema and snatched the mobile phone of the officers,” said the Railways spokesman. An FIR has been registered against the accused in the Mughalpura Police Station, he added.

There were reports that people of the areas staged protest demonstration against the PR management and federal government complaining that the campaign was an anti-poor policy. They chanted slogans and burned the tyres in front of the Diesel Shed and said that railways management had been acting against the poor residents instead of doing operation against the powerful land mafia.

Pakistan Railways Property and Land Directorate had launched an anti encroachment campaign on the orders of the Supreme Court in the month of February and so far it has retrieved 152 acres of land in eight divisions of the PR.

Meanwhile, a separate statement issued by the Pakistan Railways Police stated that it had retrieved more than 44 acres and 4 kanals of precious railway land valuing Rs410 million approximately from different sections on Wednesday. It retrieved 36 acres from Multan Division, five acres and two kanals in Peshawar Division, one acre and one kanal from Sukkur Division, one acre and one kanal from Karachi Division and two kanal and two marlas from Quetta Division.
