The general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir will be held on time and will not be delayed even for a single hour, AJK Prime minister Abdul Majeed Chaudhry declared.

Talking to the media at Prime Minister House in Mirpur late the other day, PM Majeed said that his government is determined to hold the elections to the AJK Legislative Assembly on due date of July 26, 2016. He informed that Nadra is being consulted for the preparation of computerized voter lists to ensure holding of the elections in free, fair and transparent manner.

He was flanked by his Special Assistant Ch Muhammad Ashraf, former MDA Director General Mirza Javed Iqbal, sitting DG Ch Javed Iqbal, Adviser Ch Haq Nawaz and his party colleagues.

Referring to the committee headed by leader of opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah to probe into the recent Nikayal (AJK) incident, the AJK prime minister said that although the committee would start probe into the Nikayal episode, it members have not met head of the committee so far - nor he (Majeed) knows about the timeframe for investigation. He stated that an FIR of the incident that claimed a human life and injured several others, has been lodged with the police station concerned.

Ch Majeed underlined that Pakistan always been the ultimate destination of people of Jammu and Kashmir. “But come what may, there would be no compromise on identity of the State at cost,” he declared.

To a question, Ch Majeed, who also heads the ruling PPP AJK Chapter, said that his party would contest the coming AJK Legislative Assembly elections independently without relying upon the crutches of anyone. “However the electoral alliance with any like-minded political group or party could also not be ruled out in view of the suggestions landing from certain political forces to this direction”, he added.

To another question, the AJK PM said that his government is striving hard to get settled the issue of the usage of 614 cusecs of water from Mangla Dam for drinking and irrigation purposes, through the execution and completion of the under-construction mega Rs7 billion Mirpur greater water supply and sewerage project. He said that matter of the usage of 614 cusecs of water from local use, is currently lying with IRSA for onward grant of permission for usage of water from Mangla reservoir.

The AJK PM revealed that his government has approved the construction and renovation of 35 km roads in Mirpur district besides the construction of Assefa Bhutto park on the periphery of Mangla lake, a grand world-class Islamic university and the military college in Mirpur district.

On the occasion, A UK-based dissident Jiyala and leader of the Mirpur diaspora in Britain Muhammad Niaz announced to re-joining the party ranks, reposing full confidence in Ch Majeed’s leadership. Niaz had reportedly parted ways with the PPP and had joined PML-N in the past.
