NEW YORK: Pakistan permanent representative to UN Maleeha Lodhi has said her country is opposed to any expansion in permanent membership of UN Security Council (UNSC).

She said this while addressing General Assembly session on UNSC reforms today. She said that any addition in permanent members of UNSC runs contrary to democratic representation norms.

She held that Pakistan does not accept any addition in permanent members of UNSC in any way and fully opposes it as expansion in permanent members is alien to democracy and norms of representation in UNSC. Expansion in permanent members is only in the interest of some states.

There is need to make UNSC more democratic, transparent and answerable and a joint mechanism of general assembly and security council be evolved for bringing improvement in this matter, she stressed.
