Ukraine approves AstraZenca’s COVID-19 vaccine

Ukraine has authorized the emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, the country’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the ministry said Oxford and AstraZeneca had applied for registration with the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health on Feb. 15.

“Ukraine received information from COVAX on the supply of 2.2 to 3.7 million doses of Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccines in the first and second quarters of 2021,” the ministry added.

“In addition, the vaccine will be purchased at public expense directly from the manufacturers,” it added.

The country registered 4,182 new COVID-19 cases and 153 deaths over the past 24 hours.

Some 1.31 million people in Ukraine have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. The death toll in the country stands at 25,309.
