Girl electrocuted on panchayats order

BAHAWALPUR Another example of brutal 'societal justice has surfaced in a village of Bahawalpur where a 22-year-old girl was electrocuted on the directives of a panchayat (traditional council) over the issue of arranged marriage and the charges of running away with a cousin. The deceased, Saima, was a resident of Mouza Haakrra, Mussafar Khana, 30km from the district headquarters. According to SHO Mussafar Khana Police Station Afzal Lodhi, Saimas had been killed by the family members while the parents and other relatives are claiming that she had committed suicide by drinking poisonous spray as she was not happy over arranged marriage. The SHO further said he had taken action soon after receiving a telephone call last night by one, Shabbir, about the murder before her funeral at 11:00 am Saturday, adding that they raided the area after her final prayers had been offered while the body was being shifted to the graveyard for burial. The police have arrested the father of Saima, Abdul Majeed, and four others in the case. Saimas marriage was scheduled to be held Saturday with Saeed but she was killed around 2:00 a.m. The deceased was interested to marry one of his cousins, Dilawar, and had fled away with him to Karachi but some locals brought her back the other day and were also trying to woo Dilawar as well. Further progress in investigation is hindered because of delay in autopsy report, as the body has been shifted to Ahmedpur East Hospital for post-mortem due to faulty machinery at the RHC Mubarakpur. Ex-councillor of the area Ch Aslam is the view that police had intentionally involved the parents in a murder case and they cannot do so because they enjoyed reputation. Agencies add: Despite the claims made by the family, the dead body clearly suggests that Saima was either electrocuted or killed through the use of boiling water. The arrested persons were part of the council, which ordered killing of the innocent girl. It is pertinent to note that cruel traditions are still observed in the country openly and many of those, who dare to raise their voice, are killed under one pretext or the other with impunity.
