LAHORE – A miraculous rescue effort saved the lives of over 50 labourers on Sunday. They were on the brink of being killed as a dyke they had erected to save themselves while they filled tractor-trailers and trucks with the river-bed (the Ravi River) sand broke down, the Sandha police said.
A town nazim said the workers were loading sand on their trucks when all of a sudden the river water gushed out of the dyke. “In moments, there was no dyke as if it were not there at all,” the nazim said.
“The incident, near T-No-5, spread panic among the onlookers, who though of a mass of dead bodies on the scene. But the rescue teams, which moved in timely, picked all those trapped out of danger,” a rescue worker said. “Had the boats not been there already in the river, perhaps none of them could be saved,” he added. A crane, a couple of trucks and some digging equipments were lost in the incident, other rescue workers said.
BURNT GIRL DIES: A 20-year-old girl died after receiving burn injuries in Baghbanpura Police precincts on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Sadia Ilyas, a resident of Dhoobi Ghaat.
Police concerned said that Sadia was trying to lit heater when suddenly her dress caught fires. Resultantly flames of fire within no time badly injured her, and she was taken to the Burn Unit of the Mayo Hospital for her medical aid, where she succumbed to injuries.
SUICIDE: A 22-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide after hanging himself to death in Manawan Police precincts on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Tanveer Ahmed of Waqas Town. Police said that the deceased was suffering from serious illness.
On Sunday, he got disheartened of prolonged illness over which he locked himself inside the room and hanged himself to death. The heirs to the deceased after noticing Tanveer hanging rushed him to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced him as dead. Police after reaching the scene handed back the body of Tanveer to his heirs after completing legal formalities.
DIES IN ACCIDENT: A 28-year-old young motorcyclist died while his friend sustained received injuries during a road accident with a donkey cart in Kotlakhpat Police Area on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Imran of Green Town Area while his injured friend was identified as Abdul Samad. Police said that the deceased was going somewhere along with his friend on his motorcycle. As they reached at Chandraye Road, they collided with a donkey cart owing to which the both sustained serious injuries.
