Drones violating Pakistan’s sovereignty, Hina tells Olson

ISLAMABAD - Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Tuesday took up the thorny drone attacks issue with US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson and conveyed sentiments of the Pakistani nation over illegal drone strikes.Credible diplomatic told TheNation that Hina Khar was upset over lack of US response on Pakistani efforts seeking to find alternate means to target high profile targets instead of drones which Islamabad believes were not only illegal but counter-productive. She made it clear that Pakistan seeks deepened bilateral relations with the US but it cannot remain oblivious to the drone attacks as they were in total violation of country's territorial sovereignty and do cause collateral damage that undermines efforts fighting menace of terrorism in the region.Pakistan and the US have been at odds for quite long over the issue of CIA operated drones to target high profile terrorist targets with Islamabad persuading Washington for using alternate means while US insists drones were best weapon of choice available to tackle the challenge.Meanwhile, a statement issued by Foreign Office said that Ambassador Richard Olson called on the Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and discussed the overall bilateral relationship. It further said that they expressed satisfaction on the positive trajectory in Pakistan-US ties and reiterated commitment to further build on the recent progress in bilateral ties on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interest. They also discussed the regional situation especially progress in the international efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. Foreign Minister Hina Khar highlighted Pakistan's contribution in advancing the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led reconciliation process. The US Ambassador appreciated Pakistan's positive role and contribution to the cause of regional peace and stability.
