BAHAWALPUR - Bahawalpur National Awami Party (BNAP) Chief Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi reaffirmed his pledge that Bahawalpur province will be restored into its original form. He declared that Makhdoom, Gilani or anyone would not be allowed to change the limits of Bahawalpur province. “I supported Benazir Bhutto only because she promised me the restoration of Bahawalpur provincial status but now the Pakistan People’s Party has lost its credibility among the masses,” the BNAP chief elaborated while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday.

Nawab Salahuddin claimed that he did not accept Governorship only for the restoration of Bahawalpur provincial status. He said that the people of Bahawalpur would accept nothing other than Bahawalpur to become a separate provincial entity. “We do not accept the government drama about the inclusion of Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan district into Bahawlpur province,” he averred.

He criticized Punjab Governor Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood and said that he (Makhdoom) accepted the Governorship only for two and half month by selling the movement for the restoration of Bahawalpur province. “Ahmed Mehmood preferred personal interests to the national interest and has deceived the people of Bahawalpur region,” he argued.

Nawab Abbasi ruled that if the government did not restore the Bhawalpur province they were ready to give a tough time through protest to the government. The people of Bahawalpur are well aware of the situation and will not accept except restoration of Bahawalpur as our future depends on it and we will not compromise on its original position,” he stressed. The BNAP chief declared that no one would be let deprive people of the region of their legitimate rights, adding that they reject any declaration other than the restoration of Bahawalpur as a separate province, and termed such message as an attempt to deceive the people of Multan and DG Khan. He pledged that any such attempts and rumours would be strongly resisted.

He pointed out that he supported the PPP in last general election because Benazir Bhutto had promised with him that if the PPP succeeded in the elections and formed government the party would restore the Bahawalpur province, adding that the PPP did not fulfil her promise after coming into power. Nawab Abbasi made it clear that they would not accept changes in the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Commission on new province. The BNAP chief pointed out that he cherished no desire to become the Governor or Chief Minister of the province. “I will feel proud and pleasure if I give governance of the new province to the masses,” he said.

He also announced that he would contest elections for National Assembly on two seats in Bahawalpur District and one seat from Rahim Yar Khan District.
