GUJRANWALA - A delegation of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) visited the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) Headquarters to discuss technical and infrastructural support being provided by agency under “Power Distribution Programme” (PDP).

On the occasion, PDP Deputy Chief Saleem Arif said that the USAID had extended support as announced by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton in 2009 and as part of the US efforts to support the Pakistani government to reform its power sector to mitigate the current energy crisis. He pointed out that the programme was enabling the power distribution companies improve their performance by reducing losses, increasing revenues, and improving customer services through the introduction of new technology and improved work practices.

He elaborated that one of its related projects focused on automation of the Gepco Planning and Engineering Department to increase its efficiency. He mentioned that along with the efforts to upgrade the infrastructure different trainings had conducted with practical exercises under the sub-program “Quick Impact Safety Trainings for Linemen” to decrease the accidents, line losses and increase distribution system reliability. He revealed that USAID PDP also worked with consumers by reaching out to them through the company, educating them about energy efficient initiatives and providing tips through awareness material. He added that one-on-one meetings in women colleges were also being conducted under the program to aware the women about the safety.

Gepco Board of Directors Chairman Hassan Majeed, CEO Mehboob Alam along with other officials were present on the occasion.
