ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court yesterday stopped Shujat Azeem, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Civil Aviation Authority, from using status of state minister.

The court said through documents it came to their knowledge that Capt (Retd) Azeem’s status is equal to state minister and ordered that he cannot use this status further.

The court maintained its December 11, 2015 order that Shujat Azeem will not take independent decision about the affairs of the Civil Aviation Authority and the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines.

Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi, who has filed contempt petition against the PM, informed that despite court order Azeem had issued direction for setting up an inquiry committee to probe the incident of Prime Minister’s son stuck in one of the elevators at the Lahore airport for hours. Naqvi said that Azeem had committed another contempt.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Ameer Hani Muslim heard the contempt petition against appointment of Shujat Aziz by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as special assistant in violation of the apex court order.

In view of the apex court 25-07-13 order, Azeem had tendered resignation as advisor to PM on CAA. However, he was again appointed as special assistant to PM on the CAA after the retirement of former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The attorney general in pursuance of the court order submitted the service profile of Shujat Azeem. He told that advisor to PM on CAA had tendered unconditional apology to the then air chief on 30-11-2014, which was accepted. Azeem was court-martialled by the Pakistan Air Force.

The bench questioned whether the prime minister can appoint convicted person on such an important post.

The court directed the attorney general to submit Azeem’s apology to air chief and its acceptance by him and also the summary sent to the premier for appointing Azeem as special assistance on CAA.

Justice Dost Muhammad remarked why it took long time to seek apology.

Upon that Azeem’s counsel Makhdoom Ali Khan said that there are examples of late apologies. He said during the regime of Ziaul Haq many cases were registered against the political workers and Benazir Bhutto after coming to power quash the cases. The hearing is adjourned till January 16.
