ISLAMABAD - Top and lone international-famed female tennis player Ushna Suhail thrashed former national ladies champion Sarah Mehboob Khan in straight sets in the 2nd Kulsum Saifullah Khan Memorial National Ranking Tennis Championship 2016 semifinal played here at Senator Dilawar Abbas PTF Complex on Friday.

It was sweet revenge from world singles ranked 990 Ushna, who lost against Sarah in the South Asian Games trial matches and wanted to prove a point to her critics. Ushna was in awesome mood and never looked like the same player, who was down and out and not looking 100 percent fit, when she had to play in the trial matches. Ushna brushed aside Sarah in the first set dropping just one game to win it 6-1. She continued her dominance in the second set by playing powerful backhand shots down the baseline. Sarha was looking hapless and ran out of gas while Ushna was enjoying the match and was not in any sort of bother and wrapped up the routine victory by winning the second 6-1. With this superb victory, Ushna set up final date with Sara Mansoor.

In the second ladies singles semifinal, Sara Mansoor outclassed Mahin Aftab in straight sets. Mahin was no match to Sara’s power and aggression. Although young Mahin did put up decent show, yet it was a lost cause, as Sara took the first set 6-2 and second 6-3 to make her way in the tournament final.

The men’s singles semifinals were played on five-set format. M Abid caused major upset by beating second seed and former Davis Cupper Shahzad Khan in straight sets, while Aqeel was given a real run for his money by Ahmed Chaudhry, who went down fighting in the second semifinal.

Abid won the first set 7-6 (4) on a tiebreaker as both the players managed to hold on to their respective serves. Abid won the second set 6-4 and he was in cruise control in the third set winning it 6-2. Shahzad looked extremely tired and was hardly been able to move.

Aqeel had to face stiff resistance from local lad Ahmed, as he won the first set 6-3. He was in dominating form in the second set too winning it 6-1, but Ahmed bounced back in the third set winning it 7-5. After losing the third set, Aqeel outclassed Ahmed in the fourth set 6-2 to set final date with M Abid on Sunday.
