Water shortage can emerge leading issue during next two years due to CDA negligence

Islamabad: Due to weak and ineffective planning of the top civic agency, Capital Development Authority (CDA), there is fear of water scarcity in the federal capital during the next two years.

Sources told that water shortage can hit the federal capital severally during the next two years because the competent authority has taken no solid measures to overcome this issue. Population of the federal capital has been doubled but practical steps were not taken by CDA to tackle issue of growing population.

It was also slackness of the concerned authority that out of total thirty nine water tankers only fourteen are available to supply water while fifteen are stranded in workshop or without tyres. Unfortunately, remaining ten water tankers are insufficient to meet demands of the residents of the federal capital.

Sources told that water theft is a common issue and almost one lac gallons water is being theft during transportation while 500 gallons water go waste due to negligence of the authorities concerned while CDA has no money for overhauling tube-wells and water filtration plants, which have been installed after spending billions of rupees.

Out of total twenty six tube-wells only six are operational while three water filtration plants are working out of total fourteen plants. Residents of the federal capital while machinery of the tube-wells have been either stolen or damaged.

On the other hand, Chief local government (Metropolitan), Asad Mehboob Kiyani is eyeing at budget to address issues of water while Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz had made frequent promises to residents regarding supplying of water.

CDA sources said that Rs one billion are required to the civic body for supplying water to eight lac population of the authority as Metropolitan is taking loans from the last four months to pay salaries to its employees. Over 2000 contractual employees were not paid from the last four month.

Sources further told that CDA has asked the federal government to pay its Rs three billion but despite passage of many months federation neither responded nor approved budget amount. On the other hand, water supply directorate CDA has been receiving thousands complaints but tankers are only sent to those residents who pay hefty amount.

In order to supply water to eight lac residents of the federal capital, thirty nine water tankers and fourteen filtration plants were purchased with a cost of Rs 2 billion.

These water filtration plants were installed in different sectors while dozens mechanical staffers were recruited but these filtration plants developed faults soon after installation while machinery of these plants was disappeared instead of rectifying the faults. Most of the filtration plants have become rusty. Ironically, if any resident lodges complaint against the water supply directorate, the supply of water to entire sector is halted.
