OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE The Opposition at the Punjab Assembly on Friday again a futile effort of convincing the Speaker for issuing Production Orders for incarcerated MPA Ch Moonis Elahi, and had to stage a token walkout in order to show its disapproval of Chairs assertion. The Opposition might have taken a positive signal from National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, who had brought PML-N corruption-tainted MNA Anjum Aqeel to the House through a Production Order, but it did not happen at the provincial Assembly. Immediately after the start of the 28th session, PML-Qs Ch Zaheer-ud-Din, on a Point of Order, requested Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal to issue Production Orders for bringing his partyman Ch Moonis Elahi to the Floor of the House. The Q-Leaguer was of the view that Anjum Aqeel clarified his position on the floor of the National Assembly. He appreciated Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Dr Mirza for their democratic attitude. Opposition Leader Raja Riaz Ahmed endorsed Ch Zaheers point of view, and said Premier Gilani himself addressed the issue when Anjum had tried to clarify his position. This is democracy, and we want such a dispensation in the Punjab as well, he desired, while pleading to the Speaker to use his powers for bringing younger Elahi to the Punjab Assembly. By his presence, neither the government would be destabilised nor the Opposition would become more powerful, rather it would add to the Speakers stature, he maintained amid his coteries pro-Speaker slogans. Rana Iqbal duly offered his gratitude to the Opposition members for this. Raja vowed that if any one would try to flout Speakers orders, the Opposition would be taken him to task. Minister Law Rana Sana Ullah Khan rebutted these assertions by saying that the PA Speaker did not enjoy any such powers, whereas Dr Mirza did have. For this, the provincial Assembly must empower the Speaker, he suggested. Ch Zaheer mentioned that as per rule 235, the Speaker could do so. He was endorsed by PPPs Ahsan-ul-Haq Naulatia. To wind up the discussion, Rana Muhammad Iqbal gave a ruling that he could not issue the Production Orders since the rules did not allow him. When the House will give me powers, I will use them. Till then, I cannot issue the Production Orders, he concluded. After this, the Opposition resorted to sloganeering, and staged a token walkout. Earlier, in their meeting the PPP parliamentarians also demanded of Rana Muhammad Iqbal to issue Production Orders for Moonis Ealhi.
