ISLAMABAD - In this era of technology, the nave clerics of Pakistan cannot simply resolve the longstanding and ages-old problem of moon sighting which makes mockery of the entire nation during the holy months of Ramazan and Shawal. A parliamentary committee mostly consisting of senators belonging to religio-political parties met on Friday to solve this controversy only to trigger another controversy. Controversy over the schedule that how to settle a longstanding dispute involving differences across the country especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on the issue of sighting of moon of holy Ramazan and Shawal have marred the proceedings of Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs. The meeting of the committee was held to find ways to resolve the vexing issue, but it itself turned controversial when difference of opinion emerged among the members of the committee and Chairman Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Mufti Munib over how to fix the issue. Chairman of the committee Senator Muhammad Saleh Shah, after approximately two-hour-long futile exercise, concluded the proceedings without any consensus among the participants. The meeting was attended by Senator Maulana Khalid Soomro, Senator Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, Senator Raja Zafarul Haq, Senator Abdur Rashid, Mufti Munibur Rehman and Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, as committees ex-officio member. During the course of proceedings, a consensus was about to develop over the formation of a sub-committee having representation of all stakeholders of the dispute, but both Raja Zafarul Haq and Minister for Religious Affairs Khursheed Shah refused to head any such subcommittee. An all-irked Khursheed Shah, who visibly had got fed-up after two hours futile exercise of committees proceedings that were a sheer wastage of time and tax payers hard earned money, satirically commented, This committee cannot resolve this issue even if you 'export all the stakeholders to moon A representative of famous Masjid Qasim Khan of Peshawar was of the view that slackness on the part of previous federal governments to resolve the issue was the main hurdle in this regard. Senator Khalid Soomro said the main objective of the establishment of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was to make unification of the nation for observing these holy events on the same day but it remained unsuccessful to achieve this objective.
