KPK government has launched many initiatives to protect forest from being cut down and also for more trees to be planted in the province. These include the ‘Green Khyber Pakhtunkhawa’ campaign which aims to plant 8 million trees across the province. Moreover, the KPK government has encouraged the use of steel and aluminum rather than wood for construction purposes.

The forestry sector of Pakistan is a main source of paper, fuel wood, latex, medicine as well as food. It provides habitat to wildlife. Many governments in the world take different measures to protect the forest from being cut down. Illegal logging is a pervasive problem, causing enormous damage to forests, local communities and economies of producer countries. The Ministry of Environment manages and regulates the environmental affairs in Pakistan. It is their prime obligation to take concrete steps to protect the environment.

The decision taken by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to use steel and aluminum instead of wood is admirable. The Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should also appreciate this decision and direct the federal government to apply it to the whole country.
