LAHORE - Vice-Chancellor Punjab University Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has stated the varsity will make all-out efforts to meet the huge likely deficit of Rs763 million resulting from the recent raise in government servants salaries and pension as well as other allowances, by generating income from its own resources. He was presiding over a special meeting at New Campus here on Tuesday to review implications of the federal budget for the next financial year. The meeting was attended by Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Treasurer Dr Uzma Ikram, Director IBA and Chairman Budget Committee Prof Dr M Ehsan Malik, besides all deans, principals and heads of teaching and non-teaching departments. The VC said presently the strength of varsity employees stands at 7,415 while pension is being paid to 1,960 retired functionaries. Out of Rs3.63 billion university budget for the current fiscal year, the Higher Education Commission has provided funds amounting to Rs1.10 billion whereas varsity is making pension payments out of its endowment fund worth rupees over one billion. Out of a total deficit of Rs76.34 crore, the expected deficit caused by increased salaries, pension and other emoluments of varsity officials comes to Rs580 million. The varsity is earning an annual income of Rs2.17 crore from the 270 acres of its leased land. Similarly we are getting Rs5.40 crore in the shape of fees from students whereas the varsity is presently extending academic scholarships amounting to Rs60 million to deserving and other students on merit basis. Dr Kamran said Punjab University is a poor mans varsity. We are not going to take any budgetary measure, which could lead to increase financial burden on the poor parents. Appointed Vice-Chancellor Punjab University Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has appointed Dr Sadia Ata as Assistant Professor under Tenure Track System in the Institute of Chemistry in anticipation approval of the syndicate. Punjab University Examinations Department has announced the revised written and oral & practical examination date sheet of Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD), Supplementary Examination 2007. Now the written exam will commence from June 25 and conclude on July 1, 2010 while the oral and practical exam will be conducted on July 6-7, 2010. PhD degrees awarded Punjab University has awarded PhD degrees to Hafsa Nasreen, Nazar Abbas, Nasir Mahmood, Shaukat Ali, Chaman Ara and Arshad Iqbal in the subjects of Islamic Studies, Urdu, Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology), Education, Zoology and Punjabi, respectively.
