For lasting peace

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s concern that Pakistan is losing its sovereignty since it is losing control over parts of its territory and mass-casualty attacks comes amid serious friction between the two allies. At the same time, her worry points to a reality that should not be hushed. The areas that she mentioned are largely tribal agencies, where the US is bombarding suspected militants with drones and hence cannot escape the blame of being a party to the crime. Pakistan’s sovereignty has been challenged by these happenings. The US is playing a role that is far from helpful especially at present when Islamabad has been caught in the eye of the storm. Though Pakistan still has enough force and stability left in it to overcome the drift towards a failed state as cautioned by General Dempsey, it is not by putting most of the burden on our shoulders alone that this fate could be avoided. For the army to go after the Haqqani network as demanded by Obama Administration will shoot up the terror attacks that the US seems worried about. Pakistan cannot endlessly go on fighting in the tribal agencies all the more so when a negotiated settlement can bring lasting peace. There is a greater need for both the allies to work closely, paper over their differences and jointly take on these common threats, rather than resorting to uncalled-for recriminations.
