UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations has voiced concern over the killing of renowned Qawwal Amjad Sabri, who was was gunned down in Karachi on Wednesday, as also over a number of murders elsewhere in Pakistan in the name of honour.

“We are concerned about the high number of killings in recent days, including of the singer Amjad Sabri.” UN Associate Spokesman Farhan Haq said in response to a question. Noting that most of the killings are related to defending family’s honour, the spokesman said that the Pakistani govt, societies and communities need to address the issue in order to ensure everyone of their rights and to put an end to the so-called honour killings.

“It’s an important (that) our human rights colleagues work with communities,and it needs to be done also at the grassroots level by the communities themselves,” he added.
