The United States (US) Department of State (DOS) was contacted by the Pakistan Foreign Office regarding the alleged mistreatment of Dr Aafia Siddiqui who is serving a jail sentence in Texas’ Federal Medical Center, Carswell.
A US DOS spokesperson confirmed that Pakistan’s officials had reached out to them.
The spokesperson denied the allegations and claimed that convicts in US prisons were treated according to international laws.
Earlier on June 7, the Supreme Court (SC) asked the Pakistan Embassy in Washington to submit a report regarding the matter.
A three-member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard a petition filed by Dr Aafia’s sister, Dr Fouzia.
The CJP had remarked that Pakistan’s embassy should confirm whether the imprisoned doctor was alive or dead.
