ISLAMABAD - The national and Supreme Court of Pakistan flags were hoisted at the official residence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Sunday. A large number of people including lawyers, civil society activists, student, workers of different political parties and others, present on the occasion, were in a festive mood. The national anthem was played in the background during the flag hoisting ceremony. "Thanks God Shaheed Bhutto's promise has been fulfilled today. Flag is being hoisted to honour the wish of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. We are proud of the historic victory of 160 million Pakistanis," remarked former president Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Ahsan on the occasion. But some of the lawyers felt uneasiness over Aitzaz's comments in favour of PPP and his invitation to PPP leaders to the stage for joining the flags-hoisting ceremony. The lawyers even chanted slogans against him. President Rawalpindi Bar Association Taufiq Asif boycotted the ceremony in protest while Advocate Tariq Mahmood Khalid, Coordinator of the lawyers' movement in USA criticised Aitzaz's behaviour. He alleged that Aitzaz was creating controversies while adopting a discriminatory attitude. In his comments, Aitzaz lauded the efforts of the political leaders, especially PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad and PTI Chief Imran Khan, in the restoration of the independent judiciary. He also commended the role of civil society members, media persons, students and lawyers in that regard. Aitzaz informed that Sharif brothers had decided not to send their representatives to the ceremony because their case had been filed at the apex court. He said that the ceremony of flag hoisting was the final ceremony of lawyers' mission. Later, Aitzaz announced the names of the persons who hoisted the national flag. The names included PPP leader Dr Israr Shah who had lost his legs in the bomb blast when Chief Justice was to address Islamabad Bar on July 17, 2007, Shaharyar Awan, son of Imdad Awan Shaheed, civil society activist Zahid Sagheer Khan, former MNA J Salik, Jaidev Sharma, Jamal Mir, Muhammad Naveed Mushtaq, mother of a student leader Samad Khurram, Ali Asghar Khan, Hasil Bizenjo, representatives from media Sabir Shakir, Mazhar Abbas, Talat Hussain, Hamid Mir and Asma Shirazi, Naheed Khan and Safdar Abbasi, two close aides of PPP slain chairperson Benazir Bhutto, and the lawyers' leaders Sardar Mohammed Habib Khan, Malik Shahbaz Gheba, Sardar Asmatullah Khan, Taufiq Asif, Niazullah Khan Niazi, Barrister Bacha, Anwar Kamal, Shaukat Umar Pirzada, Najam Gilani, Afzal Janjua, Baz Muhammad Kakar and Bhujan Das. While the Supreme Court flag was unfurled jointly by lawyers' representatives including Sardar Mohammad (AJK), Habib Khan, Malik Shahbaz, Sardar Asmatullah Khan, Taufeeq Asif, President Rawalpindi Bar Association, Niazullah Khan Niazi, President Islamabad Bar Association, Barrister Bacha (NWFP), Anwar Kamal, Shaukat Omar, Pirzada, Secretary General Supreme Court Bar Association, Najim Gilani, Faisalabad Bar, Baz Mohammad Kakar, President Balochistan Bar Association, Afzal Janjua, Feroza Rubab, Bhujan Das, President Sukkar Bar, Hasil Bizanju, Arbab Zahir and Sheikh Ahsanud Din. Chairperson Defence of Human Rights Amina Masood Janjua while talking to TheNation on the occasion said that she was hopeful regarding the recovery of the missing persons in the presence of independent judiciary. She said that present regime of PPP did nothing despite its several pledges. She said the case of missing persons has significance for the entire nation. People hailing from across the country reached in the form of rallies to express their happiness over the reinstatement of the Chief Justice. Strict security arrangements were made on this occasion.
