LAHORE - After the inaugural shot was teed off by Faisal Syed of Sayid Paper Mills with his message that the private sector must join hands and come forward to save the country's sports from the current impasse through generous sponsorships, the Pakistan Day Cup proceeded at the Lahore Gymkhana golf Course and the active ones on the first day were the ladies,seniors (above 55years of age ) and veterans (above 70 years of age). Contesting this event in an aggressive frame of mind and displaying good golfing skills, the best one amongst the seniors turned out to be Wajid Sethi who is known for his smooth swing and steady game. All these features were consistently apparent during his 18 holes round yesterday and and his score of gross 79 fetched him the top gross prize. The runners up slot fell in the lap of AVM Zakaullah who carded a score of gross 83.In the fight for net honors those who succeeded are Irfan Saeed (1st net) and Chaudry Akhtar (2nd net).Others who played well but missed out winning by the barest of margins are Col. Hamayun Rashid, Karamatullah Chaudry, Masood Hanif,Ather Sherwani and Naveed Afraz. High achievers in the ladies section turned out to be Mrs.Sameea Javed Ali (1st gross),Mrs Asma Shami (2nd gross),Maryama Khan (1st net),Maimoona Azam (2nd net). The top 8o amateurs will play their final round today and the round will commence at 11 30 AM through a shot gun start. Battle for honors is expected to be razor sharp and all the top names are participating and includes Aadil Jehangir, Sanyaal Jehangir, Imran Ahmad, Waqar Saigol, Shafiq Bhatti, Sardar Murad, Salman Jehangir, Mohsin Anwar, Alam Sethi, Shoaib Shams and Javed Khan. Middle range handicappers likely to put up a challenge in the race for net honors are Dr.Abdul Hamid, Imtiaz Pervez, Asad Khan, Aftab Arshad, Ibrahim Qureshi, Faisal Feroze, Mian Ahsan Saeed and Faisal Sayid, the sponsor of this championship.
