KARACHI - Aga Khan University is holding a seminar to mark World Epilepsy Day on March 26.
The seminar will be held at the university’s main campus. It will focus on diagnosis, treatment and surgical aspects of epilepsy and will also help raise awareness about epilepsy among women and children. According to an official of the university, “In Pakistan approximately 1,800,000 people from all age groups suffer from epilepsy. It is a common neurological disorder that causes brain to produce sudden bursts of electrical impulses.
, creating an electrical storm or seizure - a pattern of such repeated seizures is known as epilepsy.”
Use of proper medication has proved effective in managing the disorder in a large number of cases. Surprisingly the ratio of victims seeking medical treatment is quite low even among the urban population and is worse in rural localities.
